Tragedy struck in the Pulikuzhi area of Thiruvananthapuram, as a senior superintendent of the nursing college at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze after killing his wife and mother-in-law. The 56-year-old Ali Akbar, a resident of Azhikode in Aruvikkara, hacked his wife Mumtaz (47) and his mother-in-law Zaheera (67) to death before attempting suicide. The police found an eight-page suicide note, in which Ali Akbar cited financial liability and family issues as the reasons for his actions.
Ali Akbar had given his salary certificate as collateral to his relatives and friends to take loans, making him liable for their defaults. He had incurred a significant financial liability in building a house and taking a car loan. When his wife Mumtaz took over his financial obligations, she gained control of the property and house they had bought in Pulikuzhi, leading to an altercation when Ali decided to sell the property to repay his debts. He had borrowed a huge amount of money to pay his debts and was unable to pay back the creditors on time, adding to the pressure he faced.
The police believe that Ali Akbar had planned the murders for several days, as he was waiting for his daughter to finish her exams before committing the crime. He wrote an extensive letter describing important stages in his life with Mumtaz, including their marriage and their children’s education. He apologized to his children and the natives and cursed himself for the miscalculations that ruined his life.
The tragic incident occurred at around 4 am on Thursday, and Ali Akbar is now in critical condition in the Burns ICU of the medical college. His daughter and son have been shifted to their relative’s house, and the police have registered a case based on the statement of his son. The incident has shocked the nation and highlighted the dangers of financial liabilities and family issues.
