A suspect involved in massive theft at Manacaud in the heart of the state capital was arrested by Kerala Police. After a thorough investigation, Fort Police arrested the suspect in the case of stealing 100 sovereigns from the house of Ramakrishnan, a native of Manakkad. Shafiq (30), a native of Nedumangad living in Vallakkadavu, was arrested on July 10 by a special team of the Fort Police from a lodge near the medical college.
The police said that Shafiq was a repeat offender. Earlier, he had raped an elderly housewife in Valiyathura while carrying out a robbery. The accused entered only the rooms where the gold was stored on the second floor of Ramakrishnan’s house. The accused ransacked the whole room. The police believe that the accused had prior knowledge about the gold.
A portion of gold was also recovered from the accused when Shafiq was nabbed from the lodge. Then the accused was taken to the secret center and questioned in detail by the police team. The police took the thief to his Nedumangad house and other places in the night to find the remaining gold.
Police confirmed that they will register Shafiq’s arrest today afternoon. The accused was trapped by the police after a joint operation conducted by the officers of Fort, Thampanoor and Vizhinjam Police stations. Shadow police were also monitoring the accused.
During the investigation, the accused was taken into custody after receiving information that he was staying in the lodge. Information is now coming out that the thief entered the house and hid before the members of the house where the theft took place went to visit the temple. But this has not been confirmed by the police. This will be clarified only after further questioning.
