During his visit to the United States, Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Indian National Congress, made a remark about the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) that has ignited a heated debate. Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, Rahul responded to a question about the Congress party’s alliance with the IUML in Kerala, stating that the IUML is a “completely secular party” and that there is nothing non-secular about them.
The IUML, founded after Partition, emerged as the successor of the All India Muslim League in India. The party operates within the framework of the Indian Constitution and has a consistent presence, albeit small, in the Lok Sabha. It has been recognized by the Election Commission of India as a state party in Kerala and also has a unit in Tamil Nadu.
With a strong base in Kerala, the IUML has had members in almost every Lok Sabha, except one, and currently holds three seats in the 17th Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, the IUML has one representative. Notably, the late IUML leader E Ahamed represented India at the United Nations and served as a minister of state in the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh.
However, it is a fact that IUML is a communal party with no representation of members from other communities. They claim that the party’s support base primarily consists of Muslims, raising questions about its inclusivity and secular credentials. It is well known that the Congress party heavily relies on the IUML as a key ally in Kerala, with whose support Rahul Gandhi won elections in Wayanadu.
The controversy surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s statement stems from the contrasting views on the IUML’s identity. While some perceive it as a secular party actively participating in the democratic process, others contend that its communal leanings limit its appeal beyond a particular religious community.
As political discourse intensifies, the IUML’s role and influence in Kerala politics remain significant. Its alliance with the Congress party has played a crucial role in shaping the state’s political landscape, with the IUML being an essential component of Congress-led coalitions.
While Rahul Gandhi’s remarks have sparked a contentious discussion, the debate over the IUML’s secular credentials and its impact on the political landscape of Kerala and beyond is likely to continue. The IUML’s role as a key ally of the Congress party in Kerala adds further complexity to the ongoing discourse surrounding the party’s identity and alliances.
