Ranjit Savarkar, the grandson of Indian nationalist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to produce evidence of his grandfather’s apology to British authorities. Ranjit’s challenge comes in response to Rahul’s recent remarks about Savarkar during a press conference about his expulsion from the Lok Sabha.
Rahul had accused Savarkar of writing mercy petitions to the British authorities and receiving a pension from them. He had also accused Savarkar of helping the British during the Indian freedom struggle. Ranjit Savarkar has dismissed these allegations and has challenged Rahul to produce evidence to support his claims.
“My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi. I will not apologize to anyone,” Rahul had said in response to Ranjit’s challenge. He also pointed out that he had apologized to the Supreme Court twice in the past.
Reacting to Rahul’s remarks, Ranjit Savarkar mocked him, saying that everything Rahul does is childish. He also criticized the use of the names of patriots for political gain, calling it unacceptable.
The controversy over Savarkar’s legacy has been a long-standing one in Indian politics. While many consider him a patriot who fought for India’s independence, others have accused him of collaborating with the British authorities. The Shiv Sena UBT leader Uddhav Thackeray has come forward to warn Rahul Gandhi against insulting Savarkar. Thackeray has called Savarkar a god-like figure and has asked Rahul to avoid such remarks in the future.
