Shashi Tharoor’s statement at the NSS Headquarters that one Nair doesn’t like another Nair has backfired. His statement has been criticized as being inappropriate in political and social circles.
The criticism is that Tharoor, who is considered as a spokesperson for socialist ideas within Congress and an international writer of repute has been reduced to a person who is playing games in the politics of a caste community.
Shashi Tharoor had earlier differences of opinion with other Congress leaders, including VD Satheesan and this statement is seen as a salvo fired against them. However, this has led to things getting heated up in the party. The NSS invitation to Shashi Tharoor to Mannam Jayanthi celebrations and calling him as son of Kerala by NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair is aimed at VD Satheesan and other leaders. It has been ten years since a Congress leader is invited to Mannam Jayanthi. AK Antony was the last leader that was invited.
Shashi Tharoor had to clarify his statement and said that it was not directed to any Congress leader. When VD Satheesan’s attention was brought to the fact that NSS General Secretary had praised Tharoor, his reply was that it is welcome if any Congress leader is praised. Youth Congress State General Secretary Binu Chulliyil said that when Tharoor, who holds to Nehruvian socialism, says that the competition is in the name of a caste jealousy, it is vain.
Two months back G Sukumaran Nair had criticized VD Satheesan harshly. Satheesan’s statement that his success was not due to communal leaders’ support had angered the NSS General Secretary. He warned Satheesan that if this attitude continues then the repercussion will be huge.
