In a strong statement, Member of Parliament Benny Bahanan expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of democratic values and media freedom in Kerala. He accused the government of attempting to intimidate media workers and suppress news related to corruption scandals involving the ruling party. Bahanan specifically highlighted the targeting of Asianet News and the declaration of media workers as class enemies by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM].
Benny Bahanan MP emphasized that the actions taken by the government and the police against media workers are an attack on the democratic fabric of Kerala society. He stressed that the people of Kerala, known for their strong support for democratic values and media freedom, are now filled with a sense of shame. Bahanan warned that the attempts to silence and intimidate journalists will not be accepted by the democratic Kerala.
The MP further urged the Kerala Police not to align themselves with any mischievous activities and cautioned against supporting actions that suppress the freedom of the press. He emphasized that the police should act impartially and protect the rights of media workers, rather than becoming a tool for suppressing dissenting voices.
Benny Bahanan MP also stated that if necessary, he would raise this matter in the Parliament, drawing attention to the alleged intimidation and suppression of media freedom by the Kerala government and its affiliated party. He emphasized the need for a robust defense of democratic principles and media independence, stating that Kerala’s democratic values should not be compromised.
