The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) in Kochi has shut down more than four electric scooter showrooms for selling modified vehicles that exceed the promised speed limits. The inspections, led by Transport Commissioner S Sreejith, targeted over 12 electric scooter showrooms across the state. This action follows the extensive report published by Keralakaumudi on April 6th, exposing the fraudulent practices employed by these showrooms to attract customers.
While electric scooters do not require registration, they must adhere to certain regulations, including a speed restriction of 25 km per hour and a maximum motor strength of 250 watts. However, it has come to light that many dealers were illegally increasing the motor strength to 100 watts, allowing the scooters to reach speeds exceeding 50 km per hour. During the recent inspection conducted at the Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Center inside CUSAT, numerous scooters were found to have motor capacities surpassing 1800 watts.
As a result of these findings, the MVD took swift action, shutting down several showrooms found to be in violation of the established regulations. Among the major showrooms closed by the officials were Yed Electric and Electro Wheels.
