The recent revelation that Public Works Minister and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s son-in-law, Muhammad Riaz, had to pay a fine has sparked controversy and calls for his resignation. Ten years ago, Riaz, who was then the District Leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Kozhikode, was the prime accused in a case related to the attack on the Vadakara post office during a CPM-led anti-central strike. The Sub-Court had ruled against Riaz and eleven others for vandalizing the Vadakara Head Post Office. The District Court upheld the sentence, and the appeal to the High Court was rejected due to delays. Despite the court’s order, Riaz and his associates evaded paying the fine, allegedly with the assistance of the police and prosecution. However, following strong action by the Central Government’s Standing Counsel, an arrest warrant was issued against the minister, and he has now paid the fine, estimated to be around Rs.
Riaz, currently serving as a minister, was known for his involvement in criminal activities during his tenure as a party leader within the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM. He was perceived as someone ready to resort to violence for the sake of the party, with numerous instances of his aggressive behavior coming to light. One notable incident involved Riaz allegedly setting fire to a media house’s office to destroy evidence against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was implicated in the SNC Lavlin corruption case, one of the biggest scandals in Kerala’s history. It was alleged that Riaz led the violent act under party instructions to prevent the evidence from reaching the court and incriminating Vijayan. This audacious move was seen by many as a sacrifice made on behalf of the party, resulting in Riaz’s eventual appointment as a minister.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), despite its advocacy for democracy and participation in elections, has been criticized for its disregard of the rule of law. The party leadership has not hesitated to resort to acts of violence in the name of political enmity and struggles, justifying such flagrant actions as necessary for public service. The infamous instances of violence against activists affiliated with Sangh Parivar in Kannur and other places, as well as the premeditated murder of T.P. Chandrasekaran, are clear examples of this attitude. Additionally, the party has been accused of displaying particular expertise in destroying public property under the pretext of political struggle, often ignoring court orders prohibiting such acts. Minister Muhammad Riaz’s payment of a fine in court can be seen as a consequence of this disregard for the law. Riaz managed to evade the criminal case through his connections within the administration, including the police, and has now paid the fine after an arrest warrant was issued. In doing so, he has essentially confessed to his involvement in the crime.
As a minister, Riaz has taken an oath to protect public property, but his actions have raised doubts about his moral standing to continue in his position. Many believe that he should resign in light of these revelations. Despite the lack of any immediate action from Riaz, the public’s expectation is that he takes responsibility for his actions and steps down. The recent events have highlighted the urgent need for accountability within the government and a firm commitment to upholding the principles of law and order.
The demands for Riaz’s resignation have grown louder, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity in public office and safeguarding the interests of the people.
