A student of Kozhikode Kuttyadi GHS approached the High Court seeking permission for the student police to wear hijab. The eighth-grader joined the school’s student police force and arrived at the parade wearing a hijab and full-sleeve dress.
But as the teacher in charge didn’t permit it, the student then approached the High Court. After considering the student’s plea, the high court asked the government if the student police could wear religious clothing. The Home Ministry, however, said in a statement that hijabs, scarves and full-sleeves could not be part of the student police force.
It is not mandatory for a student to join the police force, so a student who wishes to wear Hijab can opt-out. Making religious symbols part of the army will affect the secularistic nature of students police. The order also said that if it is allowed, similar demands would be made on other forces and that clothing, including the hijab, would not be allowed.
