Two employees of the Thrissur Medical College have been suspended for handing over wrong bodies to the kin of the deceased who died while undergoing treatment for Covid. The bodies of Sahadevan, a Chetuva native and Sebastian, a native of Kumbalangad in Vadakkancherry were swapped.
Sebastien’s body was cremated by Sahadevan’s relatives after the swap. When it became clear that the body had been swapped, Sahadevan’s body was handed over to his relatives. As Sebastian’s body was cremated, his ashes will be given to relatives.
Sebastian was 58 years old and Sahadevan was 89. Both died this morning. It was only when relatives came to pick up Sebastian’s body in the afternoon it came to notice the bodies have been swapped. With this, the hospital superintendent and other officials reached Sahadevan’s house but by then the pile was set on fire.
Upon learning that the bodies had been removed, there was a great deal of tension in the area. In the end, Sebastian’s relatives demanded that the ashes be handed over. After Sahadevan’s family accepted this, Sebastian’s relatives went to Sahadevan’s house in Chetuva to collect his ashes. In the evening, Sahadevan’s body was taken to Chetuva.
