The Kerala High Court has emphasized the need to prevent unscientific and unhealthy practices in the name of religion. The court’s remarks came during the hearing of a plea filed by local resident Raveendran, who alleged that an individual is operating an illegal temple where birds and animals are being sacrificed.
The court highlighted the importance of adhering to laws that prohibit the killing of animals and birds. It stressed that such actions should be considered unlawful and called for appropriate legal action to be taken against those involved.
Furthermore, the court clarified that even if the rituals are performed within the premises of a temple, they must abide by the established definition and guidelines. Non-religious institutions cannot be conducted without proper permission, and any violation of this requirement should be addressed promptly.
The court expressed its disappointment with the authorities for their lack of action in response to the complaint, especially considering that the alleged activities took place within a religious institution. It emphasized that religious institutions should not receive preferential treatment when it comes to enforcing the law.
The petitioner also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the activities carried out at the temple. The court took note of the claim that the blood of the sacrificed birds and animals had contaminated the water, which then flowed onto the road. Additionally, debris from the rituals was reportedly left scattered on the premises.
