In a major breakthrough, the special squad of the Kottayam excise department apprehended Suhail Sulaiman (28), an assistant cameraman, on Friday for allegedly possessing 225 grams of ganja. Suhail, a native of Mundakayam, is believed to be a key link in the local drug mafia, as per excise officials.
Acting on specific information regarding Suhail’s involvement in drug peddling, excise officers conducted a raid at his residence. Multiple packets, each containing 50 grams of ganja, were discovered hidden in his bedroom. Alongside the contraband, authorities also seized a small electronic weighing machine, which was allegedly used by the accused for measuring the narcotics. Sources indicate that Suhail was selling each packet for Rs 2000.
“Suhail is a known associate of the Mundakayam-based drug mafia. He has previously worked as an assistant cameraman in films like Neelavelicham, Chathuram, and Higuita,” stated the excise officials, highlighting the accused’s connections in the film industry.
The investigation further revealed that Suhail was actively involved in supplying drugs to various individuals, including college students. Aromal Saji, a resident of Erumeli, who was identified as one of Suhail’s customers, has been named as the second accused in the case.
In a surprising turn of events, even while Suhail was in police custody, several people attempted to contact him to procure ganja, underscoring the extent of his alleged involvement in the drug trade.
The operation was carried out by a dedicated team of excise officers, including Circle Inspector Rajesh John, Preventive Officers Binod KR, Anilkumar, and Naushad, as well as Civil Excise Officers Nimesh KS, Prashobh KV, Haritha Mohan, and Excise Driver Anil KK.
