The Kerala government is considering to raise the retirement age of top officials from 56 to 60. The plan is to raise the retirement age of registrar, exam controller and finance officer. Higher Education Department has already initiated procedures to bring the required amendment.
At present, individuals can have a maximum of only four years in the said post or attain 56 years old, whichever is earlier, for retirement.
With the amendment, individuals who have completed 56 years or have completed four years in the post have to retire and many in the universities lost their jobs.
Those who had to retire from Kannur, Kalady and Calicut universities were sent back to aided colleges. Though some of them approached the Kerala High Court, the decision of the government was upheld.
