Amidst the claims made by the government on women’s empowerment, Kerala sees a massive surge in the number of cases of violence against women, indicates a report.
Women representation in local bodies is 59 percent. In addition, there are 2.33 lakh women elected as Kudumbasree office bearers. There are 45.85 lakh women members in 2.94 lakh Ayalkootam groups. Yet this shows that the number of police cases indicates that domestic violence against women cannot be effectively reduced.
Violence against women in Kerala
In 2020: 12,659 cases
In 2021: 16,418 cases
Most cases are about domestic abuse from husbands or their families. The increase in crime was due to a lack of awareness about the legal protection of women and non-utilization of the services of the Police Pink Protection Program and K-Pol App.
K-Pol app of the Kerala Police is an emergency rescue system. So far, only 5,80,676 people have downloaded the app.
