The family of an eight-month-old baby has lodged a formal complaint against a children’s hospital, affiliated with Kottayam Medical College, after their infant passed away from a sudden heart attack. The tragic incident has prompted an investigation into the hospital’s alleged failure to adequately monitor the baby’s health following a high dosage of medication.
The family of Josh AB, a resident of Kottayam Manarkad, filed the complaint with the Health Minister, asserting that their baby’s condition deteriorated rapidly after receiving a significant dose of medicine. They claim that the hospital failed to appropriately monitor the baby’s well-being, ultimately leading to the heart attack that claimed his life.
On May 11, the eight-month-old baby, son of expatriates AB and Jonesy from Pathazhakuzhi, Manarkad, was admitted to the children’s hospital at Kottayam Medical College due to a persistent fever. The medical team suspected a potential case of Post-Covid Misko Kawasaki disease and administered treatment accordingly. The critical condition of the infant necessitated admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where an intensive infusion of infliximab was administered at 9 pm on May 29.
The grieving family alleges that, despite being aware of the potential risks associated with infliximab injections, the hospital failed to implement a proper monitoring system to ensure the baby’s safety during and after the procedure.
In their complaint to the Health Minister, the family further accuses the nursing staff of neglecting the administration of medicines to infants in the ICU, suggesting that non-medical personnel may have administered the drugs. However, the hospital superintendent refuted these claims and maintained that the child had a pre-existing serious heart condition.
