The inaugural session of the 16th Legislative Assembly commenced today, with elected MLAs taking the oath of office. Protem Speaker RV Deshpande presided over the ceremony and administered the oath to the members.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was the first to take the oath, followed by DK Sivakumar, who was elected as MLA from the Kanakapura constituency. However, it was Congress MLA Basavaraju V Shivaganga from Channagiri Assembly Constituency who caused a stir by taking the oath in the name of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. The unexpected move sparked uproar and objections from several members present in the House.
Responding swiftly, Speaker RV Deshpande intervened and advised against taking oaths in the names of individuals. He reminded the members that oaths should be taken either in the name of God or the Indian Constitution.
Amidst the commotion, Bhagirathi Murulya, the BJP MLA from Sullia Constituency in Dakshina Kannada District, chose to take the oath in the name of the people of her elected constituency and her home deities, ‘Satyasaramani’ and ‘Satyapadanadi Amma’.
Other MLAs, including Satish Jarkiholi from Yamakanamaradi Constituency, Priyank Kharge from Chittapur Constituency, Ramalinga Reddy from BTM Layout Constituency, and UT Khader from Mangalore Constituency, adhered to the prescribed protocol and took the oath in the name of the Constitution of India.
