Similar to that of colleges and other institutes of higher education, the central government is planning to introduce a ranking system for all schools in the country, said reports.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that this will be implemented soon with the cooperation of the state governments. He pointed out that this will help parents get admission for their children by knowing what the quality of the schools is.
The Center started the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking in 2014 to gauge the quality of higher education institutions. Similar to this, there is a move to bring a separate ranking for schools.
However, it is not clear how schools will be included under this. Different states have different school boards, different learning styles and infrastructure. As such, ranking schools on the basis of curricular and co-curricular facilities can be difficult.
The minister said that by next year, all higher education institutions will be made part of NIRF. This will consolidate current accreditation practices. Currently, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) are conducting the ranking; and AICTE in the innovation category.
