Kerala’s controversial appeasement policy towards Muslims has once again sparked outrage, as police have booked a case against 11 artists for portraying terrorists by showing Muslim costume during a welcome song at the state school arts festival held in Kozhikode in January. The case is against the director of Mata Perampra and 10 others for allegedly trying to foster religious rivalry.
The controversy started when the Muslim League criticized the portrayal of a Muslim in costume as a terrorist. However, after the arts festival, Minister Muhammad Riaz demanded an investigation into the matter. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) Kozhikode district leadership also came forward to condemn the scene.
On the instructions of the Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, the police registered the case. The Education Minister, V. Shivankutty, announced that the Perampra Mata Kala Kendra, which performed the welcome song, will be removed from the arts festival.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the appeasement policy of the Kerala government towards the Muslim community. Critics have accused the government of promoting a policy of appeasement towards Muslims at the expense of other communities. They argue that such policies only foster division and sow the seeds of communalism in society.
