Islamists in Udupi which became the epicentre of Hijab controversy that reflected across the nation, is furious now for yet another reason. As per a complaint, they have alleged Karnataka’s famed Yakshagana insulting the religion.
Yakshaganam is a folk festival of Karnataka. The play also deals with important issues of society in the play. Conversations are often based on relevant social issues. It was during a stage performance, one of the characters is heard saying “wearing black clothes does not make one a human being.”
The yakshagana artists, however, have rejected the claims. They say that it was not intended to hurt any religion but to deal with topics of social relevance. Yakshagana is a theatrical dance-art form famously performed in Coastal Karnataka. It involves heavy make-up, music, dialogues and is very expressive.
