The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and its student wing, the Students Federation of India (SFI), have recently found themselves in the midst of multiple controversies, particularly related to a series of fake certificate cases. The latest incident has emerged from Alappuzha, where a complaint has been lodged against SFI leader Nikhil Thomas.
According to the complaint filed by a student of MSM College, Nikhil allegedly submitted a fake certificate to the college in order to secure admission into its MCom postgraduate course in 2022. The matter gained significant attention, prompting the intervention of the CPM district leadership, who subsequently expelled Nikhil from the SFI. Sources reveal that during a fraction meeting of the CPM held in Kayamkulam, it was discovered that Nikhil’s certificate had legal discrepancies, leading to his removal from the SFI leadership position.
The complaint alleges that Nikhil joined the college for a degree program in 2018 and studied until 2020 but did not complete the course. Surprisingly, in 2021, he submitted a degree certificate from Kalinga University as proof of eligibility for the MCom program. This raised suspicions as to how he could pursue the same course at a different university during the same period. Consequently, the petitioner expressed doubts about the authenticity of the degree certificate, prompting the party to take action against Nikhil.
Nikhil Thomas held several positions within the university, including University Union Councilor of the College Union in 2019 and Joint Secretary of the Kerala University Union. The petitioner, who is also a member of the SFI and a junior to Nikhil, highlighted that he did not complete the degree course at MSM College but presented a degree certificate from another university covering the same timeframe, further deepening suspicions surrounding his academic qualifications.
