As many as six girl students were suspended in Karnataka for wearing Hijab in college. The incident happened in the government first-grade college at Uppinanady in Puttur taluk.
Following the incident, a group clash ensued between students of two communities on the college premises. Police officials who arrived at the spot managed to settle the issue and dispersed the crowd.
The Hijab row escalated in Dakshina Kannada after a few girl students of Mangalore University approached the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district seeking permission to wear the Islamic headscarves on the campus.
The Karnataka High Court on March 15 had dismissed the petition filed by some students of the Government Girl’s Pre-university College in Udupi district seeking permission to wear Hijab on the college campus.
