The Uttar Pradesh government has issued an order banning the sale of liquor in areas near the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura.
The government has also revoked the licenses of liquor owners in Ayodhya. The order came into effect from today. The government has ordered the closure of 37 beer shops, liquor shops and bhang shops in the vicinity of temples in Mathura.
All three bars in hotels in Mathura were closed. The sale of liquor and meat in Mathura was completely banned by the Yogi Adityanath government last year.
The state government has suggested that traders in Mathura, which is known for its large-scale production of animal milk, could take over the sale of milk and revive the industry.
In September 2021, the state government declared a 10 sq km area of Mathura-Vrindavan as a pilgrimage center. Speaking on the occasion of Krishnotsava 2021, the Chief Minister had said that liquor and meat would not be allowed to be sold in the area.
