The Tamil Nadu government has made staring at women in public transport an offence in the state. The state has made amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act to prevent crimes against women in public transport system including buses.
According to the amendment, staring at women, whistling, obscene gestures and sexual overtures are all punishable offences. The police can file a case and arrest the accused for these charges.
As per revised act, the conductors will have to alight or hand over male passengers who misbehave with female passengers to the police. Conductors who misbehave with women on the bus are also given severe punishment. Police can file a case against conductors who mistouch women.
Conductors should keep a complaint book in buses. It has also been suggested that the motor vehicle department officials and the police should conduct inspections at regular intervals.
