With the onset of the monsoon season, fever cases have been surging in Kerala, causing concern among health authorities. In June alone, an estimated 1.75 lakh individuals have sought medical treatment for fever at state government hospitals. The situation escalated further yesterday when 13,582 people sought treatment for fever. Shockingly, since the beginning of this month, 38 people have already lost their lives due to fever-related complications.
Among the various types of fevers affecting the population, dengue fever and rat fever, also known as leptospirosis, have been particularly prevalent. Of the 38 reported deaths, 22 were attributed to dengue fever. Leptospirosis has also claimed numerous lives across the state. Every day, new cases of dengue fever and rat fever continue to be reported from various regions.
According to a report, 133 individuals were admitted to government hospitals with dengue fever on Wednesday alone. The total number of dengue cases in the state has reached 1,168 as of yesterday. It is important to note that if cases from private hospitals are taken into account, the overall number of dengue and fever cases is likely to be higher.
The health department has issued a warning, stating that there is a possibility of an increase in fever cases during the upcoming month of July. To mitigate the spread of fevers, the department has advised children and elderly individuals to wear masks as a precautionary measure. Additionally, the health department has emphasized the need to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and prevent water from stagnating in the vicinity.
