Sajin Babu, the acclaimed director known for his provocative and award-winning film “Biryani,” has returned with his latest venture, “Theater.” This new film, featuring Reema Kallingal in the lead role, is produced by Anjana Philip and VA Sreekumar. The first poster, recently released, showcases Kallingal in a striking image of her climbing a coconut tree, hinting at the film’s unique narrative.
“Theater” was shot in the picturesque locales of Varkala and delves into the life of a modernist who interprets reality through the lens of personal beliefs and needs. The film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Sarasa Balushery, Dane David, Pramod Veliyanad, Krishnan Balakrishnan and Balaji Sharma. The cinematography is handled by Shyama Prakash M. S., with Appu N Bhattathiri in charge of editing.
Sajin Babu has a history of stirring controversy with his films, particularly with “Biryani,” which tackled sensitive social, political, and cultural issues in Kerala. His earlier works, such as “Unto the Dusk” and “Ayal Sasi,” also engaged with contemporary political themes. “Biryani” was notable for its critical examination of religion and the marginalization of women in Islamic society, earning Kani Kusruthi the State Award for Best Actress and Sajin a National Award.
Despite its critical acclaim, “Biryani” faced backlash from left-wing Islamic intellectuals and was largely ignored by Kerala’s so-called secular intellectuals. The film’s nuanced discussion of women’s issues did not resonate with progressive feminists on the left. At the Cannes International Film Festival, Kani Kusruthi’s bold appearance with a watermelon-shaped bag drew attention, yet the political message of “Biryani” was overlooked by many.
With “Theater,” Sajin Babu continues to challenge societal norms and provoke thought, promising another compelling narrative that will spark discussion and debate.
