In order to analyze the reasons for the party’s rout in the recent Lok Sabha elections and set guidelines for taking corrective measures, the state committee of the CPI(M) is meeting from June 18 to 20. The meet will discuss threadbare the reasons for the debacle characterized by erosion of its vote base towards BJP even in its strongholds. More than the debacle, it is the trend of losing its support base to BJP is what is worrying the party. Even in the Chief Minister’s ward where CPI(M) gets 100% votes, this time saw BJP getting good number of votes.
The BJP came first in a few Assembly segments of the Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency, where BJP’s firebrand leader Shobha Surendran contested. In Attingal where former Union Minister V Muraleedharan contested, the vote differential between the BJP and CPI(M) is only a meager 1000 votes. The CPI(M) whose support base is Hindu-Ezhava community is rattled by the outcome.
Observers say that besides the Modi effect, it is the Muslim appeasement is costing the CPI(M) dearly.
Earlier, in the party secretariat meeting, the causes of the debacle were discussed in detail. Party leaders discussed booth-wise performance of the party. According to the reports, the leaders observed that the situation was alarming and it was difficult to win over people who have left the party for BJP.
