US President Donald Trump got back at Mariann Edgar Budde, the Bishop at Washington’s National Cathedral, who held the National Prayer Service for him a day after he took the oath of office on Monday, Jan 20, 2025.
In her address at the service, Budde appealed to the president to “show mercy to the scared” LGBT community, and illegal migrants, not all of whom, she said, are criminals.
When asked about the address on Tuesday, Trump’s response had been mild. He just said, he “didn’t like it” and that the church “could have done much better.” However, in a post on X on Wednesday, Trump called Budde “nasty in tone” and said, “She and her church owe the public an apology.”
“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people.
“Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”
Earlier, Budde, speaking to CNN, said, “I was speaking to the president because I felt that he has the moment now where he feels charged and empowered to do what he feels called to do, and I wanted to say, you know, there is room for mercy, there’s room for broader compassion. We don’t need to portray with a broad cloth in the harshest of terms some of the most vulnerable people in our society.”
Budde’s address has generated a huge controversy. The mainstream and social media are hotly debating the politics behind the address. Through his post, however, Trump has once again sent a strong message about illegal migrants and his plan to export them back to their own countries.
