In a significant breakthrough, the police have apprehended two individuals in possession of two deer antlers, shedding light on a clandestine operation involved in the illegal trade of wildlife products. The arrested individuals have been identified as Muhammadali (34) from Koottampara Cheruthodi in Nilambur and Malayil Ummer (44).
Acting on confidential information, the police initiated an investigation into reports of organized gangs operating in the hilly regions of the district, engaging in the sale of ivory and deer antlers at exorbitant prices. Led by Nilambur DySP Saju K Abraham and Vandoor sub-inspector Shailesh Kumar, a special investigation team meticulously gathered leads about the gang and its network of agents.
During their inquiry, the team discovered that several intermediaries from various locations were approaching the gang, aiming to conduct transactions worth up to Rs 20 lakh. Determined to crack down on this illicit trade, the Vandoor Police, along with the DANSAF (District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force) teams from Perinthalmanna and Nilambur, intensified their efforts to apprehend those involved.
Their diligent work paid off when the accused were caught red-handed with the deer antlers concealed inside a vehicle near Vandoor Mancheri Road. The police have emphasized that the investigation will now focus on identifying the agents, clients, and other individuals associated with this illegal operation.
The successful operation was carried out by a team comprising CPOs Jayesh and Ajesh, as well as members of the Perinthalmanna and Nilambur DANSAF Squad. Their collective efforts have not only resulted in the seizure of wildlife products but also opened a pathway to dismantle the entire network involved in this heinous crime against protected species.
