The Kerala Beverages Corporation has started the process of producing mild wines(low alcohol) from the rich fruits in Kerala. The aim is to provide additional income to farmers in Kerala.
As per reports, within two weeks KITCO will submit its project report on setting up the wineries. One plant can produce up to one lakh liters of wine per year. At present, there is no wine factory in Kerala.
The technology will be handed over to All India Wine Producers Association. An agreement was reached during a meeting between Bevco MD Shamsunder and the Excise Secretary on Wednesday. Most of the wine imported to Kerala are from companies in Maharashtra.
Normal wine has an alcohol content of 12 to 15 percent. However, the alcohol content of Bevco’s wine produced from fruits is less than five percent.
Nasik in Maharashtra is India’s leading wine producer. Karnataka is the second largest producer.
