Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud has been recommended as the 50th Chief Justice of India. The recommendation was forwarded to the Ministry of Law by current Chief Justice U U Lalit. He is expected to be sworn in and assume charge on November 9.
A copy of the recommendation was handed over to the Justice DY Chandrachud by Chief Justice U U Lalit in the presence of other judges at the Judges’ Lounge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday morning.
DY Chandrachud will have a tenure of two years as Chief Justice. He will retire on November 10, 2024. He took charge as a Supreme Court judge on 13 May 2016.
Prior to that, he was Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court for two years and seven months. On 29 March 2000, he assumed charge as an Additional Judge in Mumbai High Court. He also served as the Additional Solicitor General of the Central Government from 1998 until he became a Judge of the Mumbai High Court.
