In yet another case of sexual assault in Kerala, a woman was assaulted at Vanchiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram last week when she was returning home after buying medicines. The incident took place around 11 pm when she arrived at the General Hospital Junction.
The woman recounted that she was riding her two-wheeler when she realised that a stranger was following her. When she passed over a speed hump, the man tried to attack her. She tried to get inside the compound of her house, but the man entered and assaulted her.
The assailant groped her, touched her private parts and severely attacked her. The woman suffered injuries on her left eye, head and cheeks. There were no vehicles on the road at the time of the incident, and two women kept staring from the neighbouring house, she alleged.
The woman immediately told her daughter, who later informed the Pettah police. However, the police have not yet nabbed the accused even after one week of the attack.
The woman said that many people had asked her to lodge a complaint, as the assailant might repeat his behaviour. She lodged a complaint with the commissioner.
This comes after another woman lodged a sexual assault complaint against a hospital staff member at the Government Medical College in Kozhikode, where she was attacked post-surgery inside an ICU.
These incidents of sexual assault have raised concerns over the safety of women in Kerala, and there have been demands for stricter action against perpetrators.
