The price of the Njalipoovan banana variety has witnessed a steep rise on the back of low production in Kerala. The variety which was retailing at Rs 50/kg in April is now at Rs 70/kg.
Similarly, the wholesale price of Rs 35/kg has risen to Rs 55/kg. Interestingly, in supermarkets and hypermarkets, the Njalipoovan variety has been trading at Rs 100/kg.
It is learnt that the intensity of rains has affected the production. Moreover, the production in Kerala is comparatively low and the state has been relaying other states for the banana variety.
Not just Njalipoovan, even the prices of other banana varieties are steadily increasing. Poovan is at Rs 50/kg to Rs 58/kg range. The price of Palayamkodan (non-native) which was at Rs 18/kg in April is now at Rs 34/kg.
