A substantial stockpile of explosives was seized in Kasaragod’s Kettumkallam area. The explosives were discovered during a search operation conducted by the Excise department, acting on information related to alleged drug deals involving a local resident named Mustafa from Kolichiyadukkam.
During the inspection, a variety of explosive materials, including gelatin sticks and detonators, were found in Mustafa’s house. Further, additional explosives were recovered from his car.
The seizure includes approximately 2150 detonators, 13 boxes of gelatin sticks, and other related items. The Excise officials also impounded the vehicle.
Following the confiscation of the explosives, the Excise team informed the police about the matter. Both departments have initiated a joint investigation into the incident.
It is noteworthy that Kasaragod has been under the scrutiny of national investigating agencies due to its association with the highest number of individuals from Kerala joining ISIS.
Given the sensitivity of the situation, there have been demands for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the case.
Concerns have been raised that state police may tamper with evidence or divert the investigation, thereby necessitating the involvement of a specialized agency like the NIA.
