Controversy has hit Chennai’s prestigious Kalakshetra institution for classical arts as allegations of sexual harassment, body-shaming, and verbal abuse have been leveled against an assistant professor, Hari Padman. The allegations were initially dismissed as a disinformation campaign by the national commission for women. However, a survivor has since come forward, prompting the Chennai police to file a case against the faculty member.
In the wake of the protests, questions have been raised regarding the motivations behind the allegations. Some have suggested that senior teachers and ex-Kalakshetra stalwarts may have incited junior students to protest against Hari Padman out of jealousy. This theory gained further traction following a recent event in which Jayaram Guru, a direct disciple of Rukmani Devi, praised Padman and blessed him for his appointment as Head of Concerts at such a young age.
Reports indicate that the conspiring teachers could not find any senior students to complain, and thus, they allegedly roped in juniors with false promises and threats. This has raised concerns about the potential involvement of external parties with a political agenda seeking to take control of the Kalakshetra Foundation.
The controversy has already led to the emotional breakdown of Hari Padman, who has reportedly taken a long leave. The situation has left many hoping that Kalakshetra will not fall into the hands of those with a politically driven agenda. The National Commission for Women has issued a summons to former director Leela Samson in connection with the case, and the situation remains ongoing.
