An incident of insulting Hindu rituals took place in Kannur district, Kerala, during a temple festival procession. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM displayed the picture of P. Jayarajan along with gods and goddesses, as well as Che Guevara and P. Rajan’s pictures, in a kalasa during the procession at Pulyot Srikurumba Bhagavathy Temple.
This act has caused strong protests from the Hindu community. Hindu Aikyavedi State President KP Sasikala Teacher stated that the CPM has made it a habit to insult Hindu rituals in this manner. Teacher Sasikala also questioned why the CPM shows hostility towards Hindu beliefs and practices, while not exhibiting the same towards other religions.
Following the controversy, CPM district secretary MV Jayarajan denied the incident, stating that he did not agree with politicising religious beliefs. However, this is not the first time that the CPM has been accused of disrespecting Hindu beliefs. In a similar incident, the Communist Party Secretary’s protest march against the central government had a plot with Hindu idols.
