As many as 47 cannon shells were found during construction work at Tipu’s Fort in Palakkad. The cannon shells were found while digging for a pipeline as part of restoration work on the centuries-old fort.
The Archaeological Department team from Thrissur shifted the shells to a protected shield. The Archaeological Department said that the cannon shells would be displayed inside the fort on Women’s Day on March 8.
The preliminary conclusion is that these were shells were stored by Tipu Sultan’s army to fight the British. History has it that the fort was captured by various rulers such as Hyder Ali, the Zamorin and the British.
Only by determining the age of the cannon shells can an accurate conclusion be drawn as to who used them.
