Parents of a merchant navy officer have alleged that their son has been abducted and forcibly converted to Islam by an extremist Islamic group. The parents have filed a habeas corpus petition in the Kerala High Court.

Yogesh, 32, a resident of Pallikkara in Kasaragod, had gone to work on the ship in February 2017. Yogesh, a married man, was in touch with the family till October last year. The parents approached the police after they lost contact with him. It was later found that he had converted to Islam.

The police in its initial investigation found that one Anju Pillai, a converted Hindu, had lured him to Islam. She belongs to Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram. The parents have told the police that Anju Pillai used to call and threaten them many times. According to the parents an extremist Islamic outfit is behind the conversion.
