The Punjab Police on December 24 arrested Amarjit Singh, 55, the
granthi of the gurdwara at Nizampur Mor, for lynching to death a youth
on December 19. As many as 100 unidentified people have also been
booked. Video of the youth being tied and beaten up by a mob had been
live-streamed on social media.
The arrest took place hours after CM Charanjit Singh Channi’s
statement on Friday morning that sacrilege had been ruled out in the
Kapurthala incident. He had said that the case was that of murder and
an FIR on those charges would be filed.
The slain victim of lynching was innocent as he had no plans to commit
sacrilege, the police said. According to Inspector-General, Jalandhar
Range, GS Dhillon said as per investigations there was no visible sign
of sacrilege and the police is investigating the allegations. On
December 19, an unidentified man was allegedly beaten to death by
locals at Nizampur in Kapurthala district for allegedly disrespecting
the ‘Nishan Sahib’ at the village Gurudwara.
