Senior Kerala BJP leader George Kurian was a surprise addition to the list of members to the Council of Ministers of the Narendra Modi government. The talk about inducting newly elected BJP member of parliament Suresh Gopi was widely expected ever since he was declared winner from Thrissur Lok Sabha seat in the election. There were rumors that defeated BJP leader and former union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar would be repeated. However, this did not happen.
Kurian is one of the senior-most BJP leaders in Kerala. A committed and seasoned party worker, Kurian boasts of an unblemished political career that spans over four decades. Started his political career as a student leader, he joined the BJP at the time of its inception. A lawyer by profession, Kurian has earlier served as the Vice-Chairman of National Council for Minorities for three years.
During his tenure as the Vice-Chairman, he was the first to raise the issue of love jihad targeting Christian girls at the national level. His interventions in some sensational cases wherein Islamists had targeted gullible Christian girls were widely appreciated and helped bring succor to victims.
A non-controversial political leader, Kurian is an astute orator, translator – he is one of the most sought-after translators for senior BJP leaders visiting Kerala – and an effective organizer. A practicing Christian, he believes BJP is the only truly secular party in the country.
