The son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandi and United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Chandi Oommen won the Puthupally Assembly by-election with a massive lead of more than 37,000 votes over the nearest Left Democratic Front rival Jaik C Thomas. As the counting of votes progressed, the UDF candidate continued to maintain his lead.
The Puthupally seat became vacant owing to the death of Oommen Chandi who had represented the seat for 52 years. Chandi Oommen bagged 69,896 votes while LDF got 32,102 votes. BJP forfeited the deposit with paltry 4321 votes.
Meanwhile, mudslinging match between the UDF and LDF started with the latter alleging BJP transferred its votes to the Congress candidate.
