As per new law, police will register a case if the high-security number plate of a vehicle is lost. The decision was taken to prevent the misuse of the high-security number plates that are fitted on new vehicles. The instruction regarding this was issued by the Union Transport Ministry.
The law states that the high-security number plates should not be separated from the vehicle. The vehicle owner is responsible to inform the police if it is lost somehow. The new number plate can be secured only after producing a copy of the FIR.
The vehicle dealer should be approached in this regard. If the number plate is damaged in an accident, it can be replaced with a new one after submitting the old one. The details of the damaged number plate should be filed in the website ‘Parivahan’. High-security number plates have been made mandatory for new vehicles since April, 2019.
In cars and heavy vehicles, the sticker pasted on the windshield of the glass that contains a security seal is part of the high-security number plate. The serial board of the number plate is included in this sticker. If the number plate of a vehicle is to be changed, the sticker should be changed as well. However, in two-wheelers, the number plate alone can be replaced.
The sticker on the glass is considered as a third registration point. In case this is not present in a vehicle, case can be filed. It is the vehicle dealer’s responsibility to fix the high-security number plate on a vehicle.
It is also a crime to fix the number plate using nuts and bolts, instead of drilling it in. The arrangement to provide high-security number plates for old vehicles will be released soon.
