Canadian media and opposition parties have slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after he received a royal snub from India during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. India mounting pressure on Trudeau to stop his government’s support for Khalistani elements in his country. Canada is the epicenter of Khalistani politics.
The Toronto Sun, a leading Canadian daily, carried a lead news item with a headline ‘This Way Out’ in which Prime Minister Modi gesturing Trudeau to move ahead after the customary handshake in Raj Ghat. “Trudeau finds that he has few friends in G20 Summit in New Delhi,” reads the intro of the story.
Trudeau was angling for a bilateral sit-down with India but India did not agree. Finally, a brief last-minute pull-aside with PM Modi was the best outcome he could have hoped for. Even that did not end well though. PM Modi is said to have put the record straight and wanted Trudeau to act tough. But Trudeau was defiant.
In the press conference, too, Trudeau put up a brave front and talked about ‘freedom of expression”. India has not taken it lightly.
