Challenging the norms, the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Ltd (KMSCL) received approval from the government to purchase anti-rabies vaccine without necessarily obtaining the test result from Central Drug Testing Laboratories.
In view of the shortage of vaccine availability in the state, the government has given the nod to buy 50,500 vials of vaccines from a private company headquartered in Hyderabad. These vaccines have only the test reports of the company’s own laboratory.
The quality of the anti-rabies vaccines distributed in state was already questioned when several rabies death cases were reported here even after administering the vaccines. However, the health department claimed that there were no doubts over the quality of vaccines.
Earlier, the payment to the companies was made only after producing the test report from Central Drug Testing Laboraties for each batch of vaccines purchased by the state.
