In the controversial Sister Abhaya murder case, the Kerala High Court on Thursday suspended the lifetime imprisonment of the two accused issued by a special court. The court also allowed bail for the accused.
The High Court granted bail for Father Thomas Kottoor, 70, and Sister Sephy, 56 under two conditions. They were asked to pay a bond of Rs 5 lakh and not to leave the state under any circumstances.
The special CBI court in December 2020, sentenced Fr Kottoor and Sr Sephy to life imprisonment. The accused appealed before the high court stating the CBI relied solely on a witness statement and did not present any circumstantial evidence.
The convicts were on bail during the Covid-19 lockdown period and returned to jail in October 2021.
Sister Abhaya, a Knanaya nun, was found dead in a well in St Pius X Convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992.
