Tension gripped the city of Kolhapur as protests intensified over the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message as a social media “status” by a few locals. The situation turned violent on Wednesday, prompting the police to resort to lathi charge and disperse the crowd that was pelting stones, according to an official statement.
In response to the escalating unrest, a proposal to suspend internet services in the region was sent to the authorities, indicating the gravity of the situation. Additional personnel from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) have been deployed in the city, with reinforcements requested from Satara, ensuring a strong police presence.
To maintain law and order, prohibitory orders have been issued, banning the assembly of five or more persons until June 19. The decision was made to prevent any further escalation of violence and safeguard public safety.
The unrest erupted on Tuesday when two individuals allegedly shared an offensive social media “status,” featuring the image of Tipu Sultan, an 18th-century ruler of Mysore, along with an objectionable audio message. Right-wing activists swiftly demanded action against the perpetrators, leading to the registration of a case against the accused individuals. As tensions continued to rise, the police registered another First Information Report (FIR) and arrested seven more individuals after subsequent protests.
On Wednesday, the protesters took to the streets once again. A few organizations had called for a Kolhapur bandh, prompting their members to gather at Shivaji Chowk. Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit revealed that after the demonstration ended, a section of the crowd began to disperse, but some miscreants resorted to pelting stones. In response to the violence, the police used force and tear gas to disperse the unruly mob, which had caused damage to houses and vehicles.
The police have initiated efforts to identify and detain those responsible for the acts of violence. Superintendent of Police Pandit assured the demonstrators that action had been taken against the individuals behind the objectionable post, urging them to maintain calm and refrain from engaging in further violence.
Kolhapur Collector Rahul Rekhawar emphasized the city’s progressive nature and appealed to all residents to preserve its positive image. He urged the public not to succumb to rumors and misinformation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and harmony.
Guardian Minister Dipak Kesarkar confirmed that appropriate action has been taken against those who shared Tipu Sultan’s image along with the objectionable audio message. The minister’s statement aims to reassure the public that the authorities are actively addressing the issue.
While the situation is currently under control, the district administration has taken precautionary measures by deploying additional police forces to maintain peace and stability. They have urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and resolve any grievances through peaceful dialogue.
