The nine shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam have been raised further on Monday to release more water. At present, Tamil Nadu is releasing 12,654 cusecs of water from the dam. This is the highest amount of water released in recent times.
The Tamil Nadu government had announced that the nine shutters (V1 – V9) would be raised by an additional 120 cm (1.20m) to release 12654.09 cusecs of water if the water level in the dam rises.
Residents on both sides of the Periyar River have been advised to be vigilant. The Idukki District Collector said that precautionary measures have been taken by the district administration and the people need not panic.
On Sunday night, ignoring the request of Kerala, Tamil Nadu had opened the shutters of Mullaperiyar dam without issuing a warning. The water level at Mullaperiyar dam had touched 142 feet on Sunday night. Following this, Tamil Nadu opened nine shutters at night that flooded numerous houses at Vandiperiyar.
