Edtech firm Unacademy has sacked a teacher, Karan Sangwan, who called upon students to vote for ‘educated’ candidates, saying that the classroom is not a place to share personal political opinions and views.
The Edtech firm has justified its decision in a tweet by Roman Saini, the co-founder of the firm. In the tweet, Saini said: “We are an education platform that is deeply committed to imparting quality education. To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge. Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct.”
The Edtech firms and educators should stay away from the temptation of making political statements before students. It has become a fad with some educators to impose their biased opinions on students. Sangwan’s comments have become very controversial after some Twitter users posted the video on the platform.

This has been a campaign line of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has come in support of Sangwan. Kejriwal said: “Is it a crime to appeal to vote for educated people? If someone is illiterate, personally I respect them. But public representatives cannot be illiterate. This is the era of science and technology. Illiterate public representatives can never build the modern India of the 21st century.”
https://t.co/YPX4OCoRoZ
