Doctors at Jaipur’s Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital & Research Centre have reconstructed a penis and attached to the groin of a cancer patient after his organ was removed through a surgery. Penile reconstruction is a very complex medical procedure.
The 72-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with advanced stage of cancer. Doctors removed the penis to check the spread of infection. After removal, the patient found it difficult to pass urine. Besides that it had caused psychological impact on the patient.
Commenting on the surgery, Dr Prashant Sharma said the senior citizen had to undergo surgery to remove his penis after he was diagnosed with advanced stage of cancer. According to doctors, they constructed a replacement from a skin graft.
What the doctors did:
Construction of penis is a complex procedure. First skin and muscle was taken from the left arm and vein from the right leg. The skin was then wrapped around the vein in the shape of a penis. This is reconstructed penis is then attached to the arm of the patient and allowed it to heal. After the penis is fully formed, penis is attached to the pubic area.
According to doctors, inside the penis an implant was placed with a saline reservoir and cylinder that runs along the length of penis, a pump and release valve that’s kept inside the scrotum. According to doctors, the implant allows the user the user to pump saline fluid that is kept in reservoir into the cylinder. “Once fully pumped, the penis will be hard enough for sexual intercourse,” say experts.
