The woman terrorist who was detained by National Investigation Agency (NIA) team on Monday (January 3) from Ullal near Mangaluru for terror-related activities and Islamic State recruitment, was a converted Hindu. The accused, Deepthi Marla (now Maryam) was trapped in love jihad by the grandson of former Congress MLA late BM Idinabba, Abdul Rahiman and converted her Islam. Deepthi came in contact with Abdul Rahiman while she was studying in a dental college in Mangaluru.
Love jihad gangs were active in dental colleges in Kasargod and Mangaluru. Most of the non-Muslim women like Sonia Sebastian, Nimisha and others, who later joined Islamic State and now languishing in Afghanistan, were pursuing dental course. They were radicalised in seminaries in Kerala and Mangaluru. These women were converted to Islam for terror.
After detaining her, Maryam was taken to Wenlock District Hospital for a medical check-up and was produced before a local court, an NIA official said.
The NIA team had earlier raided her house in Ullal on August 4, 2021 and arrested Abdul Rahiman. The team had also carried out search operations in the house and had seized a few documents from the house.
Dakshina Kannada has become a hotbed of terror recruitment. Popular Front and SDPI have played a major role in radicalising Muslim youths. So far, 15 Islamic State sympathisers have been arrested from Karnataka. The last arrests were reported on August 11, 2021, when the NIA arrested Zufri Jawhar Damudi from Bhatkal town in connection with terror activities.
