Summer is here, and with the scorching sun comes a reminder to take care of ourselves in the heat. While there is a lot of advice on what to do on a hot day, it’s also essential to be aware of what not to do.

Here are 15 things you should avoid to stay safe and healthy this summer.

Staying out in the sun for too long

Avoid staying out in the sun for too long without wearing sunscreen or protective clothing. The sun’s rays can damage your skin and cause sunburn, so be sure to wear a hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

Drinking alcohol excessively

Drinking alcohol excessively can dehydrate you and make you more vulnerable to heatstroke. So, it’s best to limit your alcohol intake on hot summer days.

Engaging in strenuous physical activity

Avoid engaging in strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day. Instead, schedule your activities for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

Wearing dark-coloured dress

Avoid wearing dark-coloured or tight-fitting clothing that traps heat. Opt for light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton.

Leaving children or pets in a parked car

Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can quickly become dangerously hot and can cause heat exhaustion or even death.

Dehydration

Make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid dehydration. It’s recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Spending too much time on asphalt or concrete surfaces

Avoid spending too much time on asphalt or concrete surfaces, as they can reflect the sun’s rays and make you hotter. If you must be on these surfaces, try to stay in shaded areas.

Heavy Fatty Meals

Avoid eating heavy, fatty meals that can increase your body temperature and make you feel sluggish. Instead, opt for lighter, healthier meals that are easy to digest.

Going out without hat and sunglass

Remember to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun. Choose a wide-brimmed hat that provides ample shade.

Overexposing skin

Avoid overexposing your skin to the sun, increasing your risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF rating and reapply every few hours.

Staying indoors with windows closed

Avoid staying indoors with the windows closed, as this can trap heat and make the room even hotter. Instead, open windows and use fans to circulate the air.

Swimming in unsafe or unsupervised areas

Avoid swimming in unsafe or unsupervised areas, such as rivers or lakes without lifeguards. Always swim in designated areas and follow all safety rules.

Touching metal objects

Avoid touching metal objects that have been sitting in the sun, as they can become extremely hot and cause burns.

Ignoring warning signs

Finally, don’t ignore warning signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and weakness. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

In conclusion, by avoiding these 15 things, you can stay safe and healthy during the summer months. Remember to take care of yourself, drink plenty of water, and stay cool!
